The Nightrunner series has quickly become my new favorite fantasy series. Flewelling has created a full and interesting fantasy world that brings freshness to many classic tropes of the genre. Luck in the Shadows shines when it comes to characters. Flewelling knows how to let a character grow naturally and come to life in her stories. Any lover of high fantasy age 16 and up should make this a part of their collection.
Speculative science fiction lovers will be clutching the pages of this novel in suspense. The Knife of Never Letting Go manages to ask important questions about humanity and religion while telling an action-filled story of adventure in a strange place. This book is perfect for readers 13 and up who enjoy thoughtful science fiction or fantasy like the Golden Compass.
This is the best book available from Once Upon a Time.
Jake’s diary chronicles the story of him setting out on a trading ship that gets attacked by pirates. After he gets press-ganged into a pirate crew, he learns all sorts of thing about piracy. This book is chock full of true facts about pirates in the real world. Curious adventure readers ages 7-9 will love this story.
Following 12-year old recently orphaned Joseph on his quest to get his only family back -his beloved horse Sarah- author Gemeinhart brings together race relations in the late 1800's, western lore and a clear-eyed pragmatism that, coupled with his signature action/adventure plot twists and a kindheartedness thread permeating the story, this wonderful, evocative and first rate middle grade title builds on his exceptional debut (The Honest Truth). This is an author that has clearly established himself as a must read for warm hearted, realistic adventures.
