Great historical fiction, on the harsh Oregon trail but with a California Gold destination this novel has action galore and a wide cast of well drawn characters. Through Leah's story, Carson brings to life the plight of second class citizenship that women of the 1840s were afforded. Riveting to the end of this planned trilogy. Best for ages 12+ Just a terrific read! Recommended by Maureen.— Maureen Palacios

Stunning. A perfect book for historical fiction fans and fantasy fanatics. Leah Westfall is a gold diviner and when news reachers her that gold has been found in California, her world is turned upside down. The journey acros the continent is harrowing for anyone, most especially a magical girl traveling on her own. Erin Mallon could not be a more perfect voice for Leah Westfall, so gravelly and sincere. I DEVOURED this whole series (Like a River Glorious and Into the Bright Unknown). I couldn't even wait to use my membership credit, I had to know what happened next!— Jessica
A New York Times bestseller and National Book Award longlist selection
The first book in a new trilogy from acclaimed New York Times-bestselling author Rae Carson. A young woman with the magical ability to sense the presence of gold must flee her home, taking her on a sweeping and dangerous journey across Gold Rush-era America. Walk on Earth a Stranger begins an epic saga from one of the finest writers of young adult literature.
Lee Westfall has a secret. She can sense the presence of gold in the world around her. Veins deep beneath the earth, pebbles in the river, nuggets dug up from the forest floor. The buzz of gold means warmth and life and home--until everything is ripped away by a man who wants to control her. Left with nothing, Lee disguises herself as a boy and takes to the trail across the country. Gold was discovered in California, and where else could such a magical girl find herself, find safety?
Rae Carson, author of the acclaimed Girl of Fire and Thorns series, dazzles with the first book in the Gold Seer Trilogy, introducing a strong heroine, a perilous road, a fantastical twist, and a slow-burning romance, as only she can.
The Searcher by Tana French is one of the three best adult books I've read this year, and I think, the best she's written. Like her other psychological thrillers, this book shows her deep understandign of people and fine quality of her writing. But it also includes more humor than her other books, and unforgettable characters. Cal Hooper is a Chicago cop who takes early retirement and moves to a small village in Ireland to heal from the stresses of his job and his divore. But he gradually becomes involved in a mystery there through helping a local kid who seems to need a steadying adult influence. I read this book as slowly as possible because I didn't want it to end! And it's one of those books that stays with you for days afterwards - an atmospheric trip to Ireland.
