Indies First Small Business Saturday
Once Upon A Time Bookstore is pleased to announce Indies First day, on Saturday, November 24, 2018. Independent businesses throughout Montrose Shopping Park are coming together to celebrate their local bonds as part of the annual Small Business Saturday activities. We are excited to host some special local authors throughout the day (check out our list below) as well as exciting prizes and sales.
Help us DONATE 1,000 copies of Jason Reynolds' book Ghost, a National Book Award Finalist, to under-served Los Angeles area Title I schools. Students at these schools are at-risk and may not have access to books at home. Our goal is to give the gift of a great story and to inspire a life-long love of reading. Any donation amount is appreciated. We will gladly acknowledge our donors in an upcoming newsletter.
Indies First – a collaboration among publishers, retailers, and authors– is an annual campaign to celebrate independent bookstores and the communities that support them. Hundreds of indies across the country will be hosting local authors and holding events on November 24. Other participating Indies First stores and authors may be found on IndieBound.org.
Small Business Saturday, founded by American Express in 2010, is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It is a day dedicated to helping support the local businesses that help to create jobs, boost the economy, and preserve neighborhoods.
"Bookstores are not just for selling books, they are community spaces, we need them more than we give credit to. Let's connect with our community, our neighbors, booksellers are heros and on the 25th of November let that be known."
—Jason Reynolds, Indies First Spokesperson

Love, grief, power, and family all come together in The Cost of Knowing as Alex struggles to live his life as a young Black man grieving over the loss of his parents and best friend. His grief must also contend with his anxiety and a mysterious power that allows him to see the future of anything he touches. When learning of an event that he would do anything to prevent, he must come to terms with the origins of his power and the consequences of his actions as a brother, boyfriend, and young Black teenager. Morris is able to dive deep into an emotionally nuanced story layering grief, masculinity, and generational trauma that will leave readers with a powerful message about regret, choice, and knowledge. A book to support with full hearts, unashamed tears, and powerful voices. - review by Jessica
